Personality
Vesperina is a somewhat spoiled, privileged lady who has been used to getting what she wants. She can be impatient, ignorant of the plight of others, and gossipy. She often is curious about others' personal lives — a trait inherited from her mother and her gossipy ways. However, Vesperina isn't outright cruel or mocking, nor does she take delight in causing others pain. If anything, she wants information in order to stay on top in the games of intrigue that all aristocrats play.

Her plans for a future as a wife and matriarch of a noble line have been thrown into upheaval with the recent revelation that she has magic. She is now fearful of what she's capable of, and with her parents insistence that she merely hide it, Vesperina has come to realize that she'll have to be brave and seek out answers herself.
Appearance
Vesperina has long, dark, wavy hair and dark eyes to match. Her face has mostly gentle features, but a strong, angular jaw. Her movement is that of a lady, taking small steps with head held tall and back straight. Her voice is often measured and midtoned, though she is quick to impatience and insolence, causing her voice to raise and take on a whining quality. She's at home in silk gowns and expensive jewelry, and even while out on her search for answers she still wears some expensive pieces — namely a fur lined black hooded cloak.
History
The youngest daughter of a landed aristocrat, Vesperina was allowed more freedoms than her elder sister or her brothers. She was doted on and for a time, it was assumed she would stay unmarried to stay at home and care for her mother. However, an opportunity for political advantage came to her father and at age 29 she was betrothed to the son of a government official. At this time, she had been leaving home once a week with a chaperone to attend a painting course at the local university.

One day while painting wildflowers out in a field just outside the city, the small class of herself, another lady and her chaperone, a gentleman, and their professor, got on the subject of magic. This was something that had been rumored to exist in ages past, but for some reason — whether it was the displeasure of the gods, magic being a recessive trait that died out, or some other cause — no one had ever seen it used. Their professor was fascinated with the subject, but admitted that there was very little he could find on the subject beyond fanciful stories that were probably made up. He would love to see real magic. Vesperina scoffed, saying that it was all just stories and magic had never existed at all. The wind picked up, and storm clouds in the distance convinced the group to pack away their watercolors and head back indoors. However, the wind suddenly and fiercely gathered into a tornado that rapidly swirled towards them. The class began to run, noting that it looked like the cyclone had developed two glowing eyes of fire and the start of arms and legs. It advanced on them quickly, and while all huddled down to pray, Vesperina suddenly felt a strange and volatile reaction appear from inside her. Standing tall, a circular glyph suddenly appeared under her feet and stretched out to encompass the entirety of the group. When the tornado reached them, having grown some sort of sentience, it found a barrier protecting the group from its fists, even as fire spread across its form and it tried a second attack. Vesperina stood frozen in fear, but on meeting the creature's eyes, it seemed to fear her as well, turning and swirling off into the distance, it's somewhat humanoid form dissipating back to a cyclone shape.

The class and chaperones were completely stunned, wanting to know how Vesperina had done that, if she had summoned the monster, anything; but she collapsed to her knees crying that she didn't know how she had done it, but it felt like the protection had come from her and not the monster. She begged her professor for answers, but he had none. He had just discovered he knew woefully little about magic after all, but then a thought struck him and he rushed to sketch out what symbols he could recall from her glyph, which was now gone. It was clear she needed answers, and they all wanted to know what that monster was. Had a magic user summoned it? Had magic always been within Vesperina, or had the danger brought it forth? She was desperate to keep them quiet, worried at what would happen if word spread about what she had done. Unknowingly, as she made them promise to not reveal what they had seen to another soul, she cast a spell of silence on them. Later, when the gentleman, lady, and the chaperones tried to gossip about it, they found the words would not come forth, and trying to write it led to scribbles on the page.

Vesperina revealed the truth to her parents, but of course wasn't believed. She couldn't make magic happen because she didn't know how to control it, but after a great deal of arguing, a vase flew across the room and shattered against the marble fireplace, frightening her parents. They insisted she simply hide this magic, unless she wanted to turn into someone's experiment, but Vesperina was horrified. She had no idea how to stop the magic, and she certainly couldn't marry and form a household of her own without knowing herself and her magical limits. It was no use. Her parents demanded she hide this freakish ability and Vesperina had no choice but to leave, to hopefully discover more about this magic in a world that had all but lost all knowledge of it. Her first stop was the university, to question her painting professor. Along the way she decided to take on an alias on the road, in case her parents hired someone to drag her back. She chose Marlowe: a name with no connection to her or her family, but one she had always liked.
